The STAARS lab, directed by Dr. Lucybel Mendez, is affiliated with the Clinical Area of the Psychology Department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The core mission of the STAARS lab is to empower marginalized and minoritized youth and their families - those that have been historically and systemically oppressed, disfranchised, and underserved in society - to help them shine and thrive, and foster their mental and behavioral wellbeing through socioecological, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed research, services, advocacy, and policy work. As part of this mission, the STAARS lab recognizes that individuals are embedded within larger social, cultural, and environmental systems, which influence their experiences and wellbeing. The STAARS lab further acknowledges the prevalence and detrimental impact of trauma in marginalized and minoritized communities, and strives to create a safe and supportive environment for healing and growth. The STAARS lab also celebrates diversity, and respects and honors the different backgrounds, identities, and beliefs of individuals, their families, and communities.
