Welcome to the STAARS lab!
The STAARS lab, directed by Dr. Lucybel Mendez, is affiliated with the Clinical Area of the Psychology Department at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The core mission of the STAARS lab is to empower marginalized and minoritized youth and their families - those that have been historically and systemically oppressed, disfranchised, and underserved in society - to help them shine and thrive, and foster their mental and behavioral wellbeing through socioecological, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed research, services, advocacy, and policy work. As part of this mission, the STAARS lab recognizes that individuals are embedded within larger social, cultural, and environmental systems, which influence their experiences and wellbeing. The STAARS lab further acknowledges the prevalence and detrimental impact of trauma in marginalized and minoritized communities, and strives to create a safe and supportive environment for healing and growth. The STAARS lab also celebrates diversity, and respects and honors the different backgrounds, identities, and beliefs of individuals, their families, and communities. This website provides an overview of the lab's vision, research, services, advocacy, and policy work, as well as team members.
Lab Vision
1Pathways & Processes
The STAARS lab aims to elucidate the impact of trauma exposure, victimization, and violence on marginalized and minoritized youths’ developmental pathways, including behavioral concerns, such as juvenile offending, gang involvement, aggression, and substance use, and mental health difficulties, as well as wellbeing. Within this empirical work, the STAARS lab further seeks to uncover posttrauma-related processes and socioecological risk and protective factors, including discrimination experiences, cultural beliefs and values, racial and ethnic identity, acculturation, socialization, family and peer support, and neighborhood advantage/disadvantage, that may be implicated in youths’ adaptive and maladaptive trajectories.
2Prevention & Intervention
The STAARS lab also endeavors to provide evidence-based, trauma- and socioecologically-informed prevention and intervention services to support the mental and behavioral wellbeing of marginalized and minoritized youth and families. Additionally, the lab aspires to improve the precision and efficacy of existing trauma-focused mental health treatments through clinical research. Another key aim of the STAARS lab is to evaluate and reinforce Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) in youth-serving systems (e.g., schools, juvenile justice centers, courts, and alternative placement programs) through training and consultation.
3Policy & Advocacy
The STAARS lab aims to understand how existing policies and regulations impact the mental and behavioral health of marginalized and minoritized youth and families, and to disseminate information regarding these policies and regulations via accessible means. The lab further seeks to advocate for trauma-informed and culturally responsive policies that increase mental and behavioral health access and improve youth and family wellbeing.
